TUMMY TUCK (Abdominoplasty): Top 10 FAQs

Updated: May 9

1. How is tummy tuck done?

In tummy tuck surgery, first of all, the sagging skin is removed and the abdominal muscles are reshaped. A suitable place for the belly button is selected and care should be taken to measure it. It is ensured that the genital area is lifted up and, if necessary, the fat tissue is reduced.

2. Who can have tummy tuck?

The abdominal region is the region where the highest increase in fat tissue occurs when weight is gained. After gaining and losing excessive weight and pregnancy, the abdominal wall becomes bulging and sagging. The deformities that occur as a result of these events can be of varying degrees. Patients state that no dress suits them. It is considered appropriate to apply different surgical methods in different degrees of sagging.

3. Will there be any scars after tummy tuck surgery?

After each operation, a small amount of scar is left on every cut. Although the subject of scarring varies from person to person, suture technique is also important in this regard. In tummy tuck surgery, a scar remains in the form of a line that will remain in the underwear. The scars, which have become increasingly obscure over the years, are kept to a minimum with the help of some creams. The important thing here is that the incisions should be created in a hidden area where it will not be visible.

4. Which type of anesthesia is used in tummy tuck surgery?

General anesthesia is the basic method of anesthesia in these surgeries. The patient is completely anesthetized and the abdominal region is relaxed, making the operation easier. The muscle and fascia structure surrounding the organs are tightened with stitches and the excess skin is stretched and the excess is removed. General anesthesia provides the necessary comfort to the patient during the operation, allowing the surgeon to work comfortably.

5. When can you get pregnant after tummy tuck surgery?

Pregnancy after abdominoplasty is an issue that we do not recommend. Women who are considering pregnancy soon are advised to postpone this surgery. However, in case of unwanted pregnancies or in obligatory cases, it is also possible that pregnancies can be completed without any problems with close follow-up. Although it is not recommended after abdominoplasty, if pregnancy is considered, it would be preferable to wait at least one year.

6. How many days does the recovery take after tummy tuck surgery?

Recovery time varies according to the type of abdominoplasty to be performed and the amount of relaxation-tightening of the patient. Recovery is faster and easier in mini abdominoplasty. If the muscle and membrane layer is not intervened, the patient recovers within 7-10 days. If the membrane layer is intervened, movements that will increase intra-abdominal pressure and force the sutures should be avoided between 2-6 months. The same durations apply in full abdominal surgeries, but it is not necessary to act more cautiously because the operating area is wider.

7. How long does tummy tuck surgery take?

The procedures to be performed determine the duration of the surgery. If liposuction is not applied to a very large area, full tummy tuck surgery takes between two and three hours, while mini tummy tuck and endoscopic tummy tuck take between one and two hours.

8. Are tummy tuck surgeries painful?

Tummy tuck surgeries are not very painful procedures, as is often said. During the operation, we perform local anesthetics that act on all incisions and also on the abdominal wall for about 10 hours. Thus, patients do not feel pain in the early postoperative period. Although some pain occurs the next day, the main complaint of the patients is the tension caused by abdominal stretching and the inability to stand upright rather than pain. Mini tummy tuck and endoscopic tummy tuck surgeries are much less painful.

9. Does the abdomen flatten completely or does it form a rounded line?

Although it retains its contours, it becomes completely straight and taut.

10. Is it possible for women who will give birth by cesarean section to have this surgery at the same time?

Although possible, it is inconvenient because the volume of the abdomen and uterus is very large.
